Halloween Hooptiefest Roundup: Running on Fumes and a Little Bit of Luck

Another great race weekend is in the books, and it truly was a great one at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the Halloween Hooptiefest. The car ran well, the drivers were focused, and everything kind of clicked for this race – maybe it was the “home course” feeling in New Hampshire or, just maybe, we are starting to get the hang of this Lemons thing.

The weekend started off with a great RV ride from the nation’s capital that included some Halo, some conference calls, and one of our more egregious driving errors of the weekend. Upon arriving in New Hampshire, we did what all good race teams do. No, not unpack the car – we popped open some beers and longboarded our way around the paddocks.

Despite the frigid temperatures (which some people braved by sleeping outside) the weather was great and we got a good test day in with only a few spinouts as people were getting used to the track. Some of the non-drivers took turns as passengers and experienced just how awesome the racing is.

Friday night included some tomfoolery and some frosted table pong that tested the strength of our beer jackets. But have no fear, by Saturday morning, we were ready.  Race day one was good – the car ran well and the presence of some close friends and family gave the drivers some people to impress with their solid lap times. After the racing ended, we fired up the grill and opened up the coolers (i.e. the ground) and had another great night complete with some tip-worthy dancing in the now infamous “Rage Cage” as well as a late night haircut.

Sunday was another great day with only some minor issues – a black flag for an accident we had and a little gas issue that is worth noting. Gas had been a bit of an issue all day because there was no fuel at the track (hungry cars the day before) and so we were being pretty careful as to how much gas we put into the car and when we were doing gas station runs. By Yoon-ki’s shift (the last one of the day) we were fueled up to get us to the end – or so we thought. At 4 (race ended at 4:30), Yoon-ki radioed in to say that the fuel light had come on and, not knowing how long that gas would last us, we had a choice to make – bring Yoon-ki in for a refueling that might cost us a top 10 time in our class or leave him out there to run the car, hoping that the fuel wouldn’t run out. It was our first foray into making a strategic racing decision – pretty awesome. So, we chose to let Yoon-ki run the car dry, hoping that it would last us for the now 20 minutes left and suit up two guys to go to the fueling station in case we needed to fuel up. It was a good decision – the care made it to the end and, just as it was exiting the track to go into the paddocks, the fumes coughed one last time and the car died. Now that is F1 kind of planning.

Results: 8th place in Class B, 42nd overall. Totally worth the suspense of an empty gas tank.  The leaderboard at NHMS showed the top 45 teams, and we were extremely excited to end the weekend on the board.

With race day over, we still had a little excitement left in our day. First, we won the Volvo 850Versus 21st Century GM Rental Car Challenge trophy  for being the fastest car in a “race-specific” category – awesome. Second, Peter almost lost a finger attaching the trailer to the truck – not awesome.

Overdue LeMons South Update

Well, Fully Torqued Racing has dropped the ball on posting an update from our race weekend in Kershaw, SC, but we’re heading up to Loudon for out next race in an RV and have a few hours to kill on our ride up.

LeMons South was a comedy of errors from start to finish…

About 30 minutes into our 7 hour drive down to Charlotte, Lisa’s trailer got a flat and we spent over an hour trying to get the Uhaul peeps to swap it put for us.  The remainder of the ride went smoothly, which gave Josiah a chance to check out the local scene (and a few locals) in Charlotte…

We rolled into Carolina Motorsports Park ready to pass tech inspection and get some hot laps with on the track with our suspension improvements…things were looking up.  After about 30 laps of glory, one of our drivers calls in on the radio saying there was a loud sound of metal grinding on metal, and that he was getting towed off the track.  Sounded like it was going to be a long day.

And it was…the boot on our outer CV on the passenger’s side hadshredded, and the metal joint was completely mangled (below).  For those of you that don’t know…that’s a pretty important component for the car to roll.

We rolled (with clanking metal) up to tech inspection to find that our washers for the seats and belts we not considered sturdy enough to pass.  With two items on our agenda for the day, we frantically began calling every parts store within 100 miles to see if we could source a new drive axle.  Fortunately, a place about an hour away had the part we needed.  We split up to work on the washers as well and were fortunate to scrap up an assortment of “passable” washers from other teams.

Right about around this time, we got an update from the rest of our team on their way down…the GTI was only firing on 4 cylinders…things weren’t looking good.  Everything was breaking…our pets heads were falling off.

We were still waiting for the new part when it was time to drive our car through town in the LeMons parade.  Since we couldn’t drive, we decided to town our car through the parade using Al’s truck…haha embarrassing…oh well we were having fun and drinking beers.

As we rolled the car into town to our spot on the main street for the car show, our wheel bearing fell out, and front tire locked up completely…we had to jack up the front and roll the car on the jack…things were worse than ever.

Finally the past arrived, so we spent the rest of the block party putting in our new drive axle in the middle of town…everyone was getting a kick out of the team who had to tow their car and now had it in pieces in the middle of the street.

Eventually, we got everything buttoned up and were ready to race the next day.

Things started looking up on Saturday…the racing was amazing and our cars was fast…the suspension improvements turned out to be really good.  We did almost blowout a tire in the afternoon though.

Late in the afternoon, there was a tragic accident involving a heart attack and a driver from another team.  Racing ended for the day, and spirits were low.  On top of that, a huge storm rolled in, and we were forced to secure as much as we could and head to a local hotel for the night.

Sunday racing was delayed due to track repairs from the accident from the day before, but we got back on the track shortly after noon.  We got a few shifts in before blowing our second drive axle (the breand new one).  At this point (with only a few hours left and no part, we decided to pack up and head out with Currier in his new headress.  We stopped for some of Kershaw’s finest (Garden of Eat’n) and Bojangles on the way home.

It was a crazy weekend of ups and downs, but that’s LeMons and that’s why we do it.  See y’all in London.

On our way to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for our 3rd and final race of the season!

Our inaugural season is coming to a close this weekend with Halloween Hooptiefest at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH! We rented an RV for the trip, and Erik is taking the first driving stint.

We expect a large showing of Fully Torqued friends and family from across the New England area to come out and support us as we aim for our best finish of the year. There’s a punkin chunkin contest, potato cannon contest, and plenty of other fun to be had as we battle it out in (most likely) class B. Rumor has it that there will be a dance party on Saturday night comparable to the one at Summit Point earlier this year! Zach may even have a Hawaiian shirt ready for it despite the expected sub-freezing evening temperatures.

Race #1 Completed!

Thanks to all our friends and family who came out to support us at Capitol Offense 2013!  We don’t know the official standings yet, but we finished in the top half overall and in our class!  There were 101 total teams, 33 in Class B with us. More pics, vids, and official results to follow.

We’re Going Racing!

Fully Torqued Racing has officially been accepted to our first race, June 14-16 at Summit Point, WV.  We’re going to only race the Volvo due to time and budget constraints, but we’re going to keep both cars moving forward for potential future races.  Here’s our team concept/theme:
